Ya Sou! Bellingham’s Annual Greek Festival 9/9-9/11, 2016

CoffeeEvery year toward the end of summer, St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church holds the Greekfest. Every year, it impresses the 30,000+ attendees and I am always one of them.

Every year, I go for at least three days and I am never disappointed. And every year I leave, looking forward to the next one. Lucky for me and the rest of us, the festival is almost here again.

If you’re not familiar with Greek food, think thin, buttery dough wrapped around feta cheese, roasted chicken kabobs, deep fried donut holes soaked in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon, and butter cookies covered in a layer of powdered sugar. This is just a “taster” of all the goodies that are offered. And of course, what would a Greek festival be without a little beer and wine as well.

SouvlakeThe Greeks are known for many things—democracy, science, philosophy, but arguably top on the list should be food. You may not find much in the way of science here, but when it comes to food, this festival does it right.

In addition to the delectable fare, traditional music and dancing are held daily, and there is a tent where visitors can buy items like cookbooks, “worry beads,” religious icons, music and other cultural knickknacks. Make sure to save the date and check out some great Greek food.
